Debuting around 1587, “The Spanish Tragedy” was a smash hit that had a palpable influence on contemporaneous English playwrights. Watching it today you can see the apparent seeds of better-known works such as “Hamlet.” I haven’t heard of it being performed in the Bay Area before, though I wouldn’t rule it out. In any case, it’s a rare opportunity to see a forgotten classic by one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries. And in a lively production staged by Marin Shakes managing director Lesley Schisgall Currier, it’s also pretty darned captivating.
